This is what I believe to be the true mind of Christ and an example that the Church itself should follow.” His Story Known also by the names Scary, Scary Jerry, and Mr. Scary J, he is the lead vocalist and founder of Crystmynd. Having moved from the Appalachian Mountains to the Cincinnati Tri-state area at the age of sixteen, he adds a blend of Appalachian Spiritualism and urban plight to the Crystmynd mix. His vocal style ranges from somewhat gothic melodies to industrial angst with the occasional hip-hop element thrown in to break it up. Sometimes singing, sometimes screaming, and sometimes rapping, Scary is always making a point with thought-provoking and occasionally controversial lyrics. Inspired by a strict religious upbringing, songs like In His Name could nearly be classified as “praise and worship” in nature, but the blame is strongly cast at the church in the offensively accusational song Monastery of Malevolence. The “labors of love” is another topic often covered with great passion. The songs Dysfunctional and Fathom are both anthems for the angry, broken-hearted masses, while hopeless romanticism shines through in the soulful ballad Misplaced Faith. Scary is also known for his signature use of vocal effects and creative sampling and orchestration. However, the standout characteristic of Scary Jerry is his unpredictable nature. With many faces and many voices, he is the physical manifestation of his song Chameleon. You never know exactly what to expect from The Scary One. |
